King's Peer Mediators Atttend the Western Justice Center On February 23, 2016, six of King’s peer mediators attended the Western Justice Center Peer Mediation Invitational. Students were provided additional skills coaching along with the opportunity to meet counterparts from different schools. The activities they participated in reinforced their training and provided them with an introduction to legal and mediation professions as career options. The day celebrated and validated the key role that peer mediators have in their schools. Our students represented Thomas Starr King Middle School with pride and were recognized individually for their character and performance.
Jaxx Educational Theatre School Presents: High School Musical! The Jaxx Theatricals is happy the program attracted enough kids this year to have our own production in the auditorium! 7th Annual GATE/SAS Parent Conference The 7th Annual Districtwide GATE/SAS Parent Conference will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 8:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m. at RFK Community Schools (registration begins at 7:30 am). This free parent event is open to all parents of LAUSD GATE/SAS students. Translation will be provided in Spanish.Judy Galbraith, author and gifted education expert, is the keynote speaker. Parents will receive a copy of Galbraith’s book, THE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR GIFTED KIDS (one per family while supplies last). There will also be a variety of workshops for parents addressing the academic and social-emotional needs of gifted learners.
SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age We are thrilled to announce the Los Angeles premiere of SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Producers Karin Gornick and Lisa Tabb.

School Board prepares to welcome student member When the School Board convenes on Tuesday, there will be an eighth member sitting in the “horseshoe” – a math and science whiz from the STEM Academy at Bernstein High who will provide an official student voice on the issues and challenges affecting the District.Leon Popa won last month’s student election to become a non-voting member of the board. The seat was created after some 3,000 students signed petitions seeking a seat for one of their own on the dais.
Three 8th-grade GAT students were winners in the NY Times Student Review Writing Contest! Max Oppenheimer was a runner-up and Mateo Guynn and Kenneth Vargas earned honorable mentions. They reviewed the Malala documentary. They competed against 1600 national entries!
