Dear King Parents,
I am pleased to announce that King MS has been chosen as a summer school site. Summer school classes will run for 4 weeks from July 6 - July 31, 2009. King must have a student enrollment count of 500 students with an 85% daily attendance rate. For this reason, I cannot stress enough the importance of daily attendance once you have been accepted into our summer school program. Information regarding student applications for summer school will be made known to you as soon as it becomes available. Be assured, all students in need of intervention during the summer will have an opportunity to apply as we transition to a traditional calendar.
We will also continue to provide our students with the Jaime Escalante mathematics enrichment program during summer. This program is entirely separate from summer school. Students who meet the criteria will be invited to participate. Parents, please note that there will be a Parent meeting regarding this program on Thursday, April 16, 2009 in room 136 at 5:00 p.m.
From Monday, March 23 – Friday, April 3, 2009 our C-Track students took the California Standards Test (CST). A-Track and B-Track students will test from May 12–26, 2009. The State and Federal governments use these exams to determine which schools have met their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). This school year our targets are 46% proficiency in English Language Arts and 47.5% in Mathematics. Individual schools use the information to reclassify English Learners, and program students into various classes (gifted, SAS or ESL). Please help our students understand the importance of doing their best in these exams.
I want to thank parents for their support in expanding technology across all grade levels at King. Parents will be able to see some of our students’ technology projects at the Annual Parent Summit held in the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday, April 25, 2009.
Both LAUSD’s and King’s website are full of information and resources for our parents. On April 4, & 18 parents are invited to learn how to navigate through LAUSD and King’s website and establish e-mail accounts in order to communicate with their children’s teachers. To encourage parent participation and communication with our school and teachers, we are planning to purchase computers specifically for parent use.
