T.S. King Middle School will be holding a Poetry Slam. The reading of original student poetry will be presented on Friday, October 19 during periods 2, 3 and 4. Approximately 50 students will be reading their original poetry in the hopes of bring home the first place trophy.
Each student poet reads his or her poem in front of the student audience in the Auditorium. The poem and its reading is judged by a panel of judges made up of teachers and students. The highest score wins the contest. It is that simple.
The T.S. King Middle School Poetry Slam has been held for the past five years. Mr. Steve Abee began the poetry competition in 2003 with former School Librarian Judy Davidson.
The event has been featured in articles in the Los Angeles Times and the Los Feliz Ledger. Also it has been the subject of a few student multi-media projects and documentaries.
The Slam has become an institution at King. Who would have thought that? The great thing about the Poetry Slam is that students get to express themselves and get validation for their personal feelings and thoughts as expressed in creating and sharing their poetry.
