OUR PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE FOR NOVEMBER 2010

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear King Parents,

November brings exciting news to King’s Campus! With the support and collaboration of our parents, students and staff, King has been given an official approval from our District to implement in 2010-2011 a new Environmental Studies Magnet on our campus next school year. Our new magnet program will provide opportunities for students to participate in a rigorous, interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum in which environmental literacy is integrated into all subject areas. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in specialized electives and partnership activities with community-based environmental organizations. Students in 6th grade will be offered Environmental Studies and Environmental/Agricultural Education, 7th grade students will enroll in Horticulture and 8th graders in Environmental Management. We are excited about expanding the public school choice options available to families in Los Angeles and about offering opportunities for significant community involvement and community service to our students.

Congratulations all the participants in our first annual college awareness contests. Judges had a difficult time choosing winners with over 70 entries in the video contest, a short 2-minute or less film answering the contest prompt: “College Starts at King!” Explain what this means to you. Why would the school choose this as a slogan? In first place, Jensen Lo & Alyssa Villagarcia in Ms. Ingram’s homeroom, second place Justin Orellana in Ms. Holtzinger’s homeroom and third place went Cristian Lopez in Mr. Staub’s homeroom. Honorable Mentions included Angel Hernandez and Jose Carranza, Caitlin Pascua and Jairo Ticas, Jennifer Sanchez and Rebecca Vela and Katherine Hernandez. The winning bookmark/pennant came from Daisy Cabrera a 7th grade student in Mr. J.M. Gutierrez’s homeroom. During the month of October King continued to have one the highest attendance rates in our district, approximately 98%. We ask for your continued support in sending your children to school on a daily basis especially now with the holidays fast approaching.

We invite parents to participate in our monthly Coffee with the Principal the first Tuesday of every month. On Tuesday, November 2, we will hold parent elections for our Shared Decision Making Council during Coffee with the Principal. We welcome your active participation in our school.
