MAGNET NEWS

The new CHOICES brochure, which will include the magnet application for the 2011-12 academic year, will be mailed home to families who have previously applied to a magnet program during the 2nd week of November. Every LAUSD school will receive brochures during the 3rd week of November for distribution to all interested families who did not receive one in the mail. Come by the magnet office for an application. All magnet students wishing to continue participating in a magnet program for high school must submit a 2011-12 application by the December 17th deadline. Applications must be mailed directly to the Office of Student Integration.

To assist families in choosing the best high school option, we will once again host a High School Informational Meeting on Wednesday, December 1st from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm in Room 136 and in our school library. All 8th grade families are encouraged to attend, as well as 7th grade families wishing to start early in learning about the various high school programs. Schools that will be represented include: John Marshall Gifted/High Ability Magnet and School for Advanced Studies Programs, Zoo Magnet, Bravo Medical Magnet, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), Central High School #9, Downtown Business, Fashion Career Center, & Electronic Integration Magnet, and more. Plan on attending this informative event.

The next magnet parent meeting will take place on Monday evening at 6:00 pm in the King Library. We have a special presentation by one of our 6th grade magnet teams, Ms. Lay and Ms. Turcios, information about applying for high school magnet programs, and school and magnet updates. A Friends of King Magnet meeting to discuss and plan upcoming fundraising efforts will take place on the same day at 5:00 pm in the Parent Center. All are welcome to attend these meetings.

If you know of any families considering the T.S. King Magnet Program for the fall of 2011, please let them know that we are hosting magnet tours every Thursday starting at 8:30 am through the 2nd week of December. For more information, please have any interested families call the magnet office at (323) 644-6755.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

It’s November, you should have received your children’s first progress report. Next progress report is due to be mailed out December 1st. There will be no school Thanksgiving week of Nov. 22nd – 26th. Remember, a progress report is an official notification of how your child is doing currently in their courses. If you have, questions or concerns call your child’s counselor to schedule an appointment with the teachers. October was college and career awareness month. We had a lot of amazing videos created by students and an outstanding assembly organized by Ms. Milio. Counselors presented information on types of colleges and universities, A-G requirements for high school, and career interest inventories. The EXPLORE test will be given to all 8th grade student in December. This assessment aids students in discovering different careers that match their interest along with assessing college readiness. There will be a Parent in-service on Wednesday, December 8th. We look forward to seeing you there. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. College begins at King!
