ANNUAL COASTAL ART & POETRY CONTEST
The California Coastal Commission invites California students in kindergarten through 12th grade to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the annual Coastal Art & Poetry Contest. Up to ten winners will be selected to win $100 gift certificates to an art supply or book store, and each winner's sponsoring teacher will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies, courtesy of Acorn Naturalists, www.acornnaturalists.com. All winners and honorable mentions will receive tickets for their families to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, courtesy of the Aquarium. Students may have their work featured on Commission web pages and materials, and winning entries will be exhibited throughout the state, including at the San Francisco Bay Model in Sausalito, the Ford House Museum in Mendocino, and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro. Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2011 to be eligible for the upcoming contest. ORTHOGRAPHY RULES!
The October Spelling Bee was held in the King Middle School Library during period 4. The participants were eager, enthusiastic, and excellent spellers! A total of 63 words from the list posted online were needed to determine our three winners. Our top spellers were:
1st – Sandy Situ
2nd –Ava Chamberlain
3rd – Eddie Zhou
Congratulations to all the talented students who participated. Their good sportsmanship and intensity were obvious. We hope to see them take part in future monthly Bees. Our next Spelling Bee is scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2010. All 6th and 7th grade students are invited to participate in the fun. Word Lists are posted online. Orthography Rules!

PARENT WORKSHOPS!
Parents are encouraged to attend weekly parent workshops during the month of November. Receive valuable information that will help your children succeed in middle school. This months topics include:
November 4 – Discipline Policy – King is committed to providing a safe environment for all our students. We place a strong position against bullying or any behavior that infringes on the safety or well being of our students or that interferes with learning or the instruction in the classroom
November 11 – School Safety Plan – Our school safety plan addresses Prevention, Emergency and Recovery Plans. Come learn about King’s procedures in dealing with emergency preparedness, traffic safety, and crisis intervention. Copies of our plan are available in the main office.
November 18 – Health and Community Resources – An emergency card must be on file at the school site so the parents can be notified promptly in case of an accident or illness during school.
Come to receive information on school policy for returning students following a serious illness or injury. Hope to see you at our parent workshops on Wednesdays 8:30 a. m. in the Parent Center room 101.
