MAGNET CORNER
First and foremost, I wish a happy 2010 filled with many good things for all of you and your families. We look forward to our continued partnership in fostering our students’ continued academic growth and achievement.
We are back in full swing with just a few more weeks in the fall semester - the last day is Friday, February 5th. Report cards with final grades will be mailed home the following week. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s academic achievement, please contact Ms. Weir, our magnet guidance counselor at (323) 644-6749 or by email at [email protected]. Second semester begins Monday, February 8th and will end with the last day of classes on Thursday, June 24th. I
Our school was featured in a Los Feliz Ledger article highlighting the King Magnet’s participation in the National Geographic Bee. Our school champion, Allison Balmadrid, will now go on to compete at the next level in a written exam with the chance to advance to both the state and national levels. This year’s geography bee was once again organized by Ms. Popa, our 7th grade history teacher. You can read the entire article online at:

The King Poetry Slam will be held on Friday, February 5th. This event is organized by Mr. Abee, our highly esteemed 7th grade English teacher. Awards will be distributed to the top student poets selected by a panel of student and faculty judges.
Our next magnet-wide parent meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 17th at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. Parent meetings are planned for every third Wednesday of the month - same place, same time.
Once again, thank you for your continued support. Know that my door is open to you. I welcome any opportunity for dialogue about how we can continue to support our students in this new year.

THE JOY OF SPELLING
Thanks for your participation in the 6th grade Spelling Bee last week. It was truly a learning experience. Mr. Hanson was beside himself that we were finally able to have a gathering to celebrate the Joy of Spelling.
1st Place – Mario Lopez
2nd Place – Aram Martirosyan
3rd Place – Bianey Chavez
All the students did very well. They demonstrated great sportsmanship. Thanks to Mr. Purdy and Ms. DeMunda for bringing their classes. Next time we hope several teachers will bring their 6th grade classes to be an audience for this event.
Our next round will feature Cities of California. A master list of the cities is posted online. From the master list, Mr. Hanson creates a short weekly word list for students to practice. The weekly list may be found in their classroom or in the library. Also, the Spelling Bee rules that we will be using for these events are in the classrooms/library.
