MAGNET NEWS FOR NOVEMBER

MAGNET NEWS

While the palm trees and most other trees in Los Angeles remain green and the daylight hours as warm as summer days, the fall season has inevitably arrived to the King Magnet.  Happy fall to one and all.  We have had a productive first couple of months.  I feel so fortunate to work with such an outstanding staff, dedicated parents, and intellectually engaged student body.  Thank you for all of your support in making the start of this school year a dynamic one.  I look forward to our continued partnership throughout the remaining autumn months.

The first 5-week progress reports were mailed home in mid-October with the mid-term mark report being mailed out on November 19th.  Please make sure to make an appointment with your child’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns regarding their academic progress so far.  All teachers share the same conference period at each grade level to make it easy for you to meet with the entire grade-level team at one time.  Our superb guidance counselor, Ms. Weir, will assist you by coordinating a conference for you and your child.  You may contact Ms. Weir directly in the guidance office at (323) 644-6749.

Our second magnet parent meeting was held on October 22nd.  The Friends of King Magnet Board was elected: Mr. Mauricio Figuls continues as our Co-President, who will serve with Rossana Perez, our newly elected Co-President, and they are joined by our newly elected Secretary, Lisa Watts Lawton Secretary.

Parents in attendance voted to support the first of three major fundraisers this year - a holiday gift wrap and chocolate sale.  Mr. Figuls is coordinating the effort this year with the Sally Foster.  A magnet-wide assembly will be held next week during homeroom as the official kick-off.  We encourage all families to participate.  Funds will support the continued expansion of our technology program, field trips to museums and other cultural venues, and a variety of enrichment opportunities ranging from a Shakespeare production to admission fees for the Renaissance Faire.

The next magnet-wide parent meeting will be held on Thursday, November 19th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the school library, and the next Friends of King Magnet fundraising committee meeting will take place on Thursday, November 5th from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Parent Center.

Mr. Abee, our outstanding 7th grade English and Creative Writing Elective teacher organized and hosted the first of several Poetry Slams to be held throughout the year.  This first event was held on October 23rd and featured the works by many of our impressively expressive magnet poets.  Participants performed their poems in front of a full auditorium and a panel of esteemed student and teacher judges.  The second and final round included the top 10 poets from the 1st round of participants. We are proud to announce the following champions of the first 2009-2010 Poetry Slam: Maya Abee (1st place), Ben Freyberger (2nd place), and Sage McBride Scanlon Perez (3rd place).  All participating poets expressed their unique perspective as part of the kaleidoscopic range of middle school realities through their poetic works.  Works were varied - from emotionally gripping poems to light-hearted raps and witty free-flow musings.   A sincere congratulations goes out to all.

And, finally, please note that the 2010-2011 CHOICES brochures will be mailed home during the first week of November.  The magnet office will have brochures for distribution during the second week of the month.  Any 8th grade magnet students who wish to attend a high school magnet must complete the magnet application from the new CHOICES brochure and submit the completed form to the Student Integration offices by the December 18th deadline in order to receive full applicable magnet points.  Please call the magnet office for more information at (323) 664-6755.

Once again, thank you for your continued support.  Have a wonderful autumnal season.

Mr. Hernandez,

Magnet Coordinator
